Installation
Step 1 — Install FFmpeg (one-time)
VideoLift uses FFmpeg for video muxing. Open Terminal and run:
If you don't have Homebrew, install it first from brew.sh — it's a single command.
Step 2 — Install VideoLift
- Click the Download button on this page to get the
.dmg file.
- Double-click the
.dmg to open it.
- Drag the VideoLift icon into the Applications folder.
- Launch VideoLift from Launchpad or Applications.
Step 3 — First Launch (Gatekeeper)
On first launch, macOS may show an "unidentified developer" warning:
- In Applications, right-click VideoLift → Open
- Click Open again in the dialog
You only need to do this once. After that, double-click works normally.
How to Use
- Copy the URL of the YouTube video you want to download.
- Paste it into the input field at the top of VideoLift and click Download.
- Watch the real-time progress indicator.
- Once complete, find the video in the Library tab or click Show in Finder to open the folder.
You can change the download folder in Settings.
FAQ
Q: Where are downloaded videos saved?
By default, in a VideoLift directory inside your user folder. You can change this in Settings. Files are stored only on your computer — nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Q: Can I download private or members-only videos?
No. VideoLift only supports publicly available YouTube videos.
Q: Can I choose the video quality?
Yes. Before starting a download, all available qualities (4K / 1080p / 720p, etc.) are shown and you can pick your preferred option.
Q: What happens if my internet connection drops mid-download?
VideoLift will auto-resume when the connection is restored. You can also retry failed downloads from the Library.
Q: Is this legal?
Downloaded videos are for personal use only. Redistribution or commercial use may violate YouTube's Terms of Service and copyright law.
